Several celebrities, who strengthened their fan base through TV show appearances, found themselves entangled in real-world controversies.

There is a saying that “truth is stranger than fiction”, nothing proves this adage more than the spree of controversies surrounding the TV celebrities. The drama that went within the set of the superhit reality show Bigg Boss, flowed into the outside world. Soon fast friends become foes and lovers struggle amidst breakup rumors. Many celebrities who consolidated their fan base by participating in TV shows, courted controversy in the real world by getting embroiled in legal cases. Like all years, this year too the TV world was rife with controversies, both on screen and more so off the screen. Here are our five picks of top TV controversies of this year:

Elvish Yadav’s snake venom case

Elvish Yadav, a YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT2 winner, and five others were booked under provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and for criminal conspiracy under IPC. Their name was mentioned in the FIR after snake venom and 9 poisonous snakes, which were allegedly used during rave parties hosted by Yadav, were recovered from a banquet hall in Noida. The snakes and snake venom were found following a tip-off from People for Animals, an animal rights organization. Yadav has denied all the allegations through statements on social media.

Elvish vs Abhishek

Social media influencers Elvish Yadav and Abhishek Malhan started their Big Boss OTT-2 journey with great bonding and brotherhood. However, this soon turned sour. When Abhishek was hospitalised, Elvish was criticised for not visiting him, and Abhishek, in turn, was trolled for missing the Bigg Boss reunion party. After winning the Bigg Boss OTT trophy, Elvish posted a vlog in which he alluded that Abhishek has been tarnishing his image. In response, Abhishek publicly asked Elvish to clear the air about ‘negative PR’ accusations indirectly levelled against him.

Karan-Tejasswi breakup rumours

Karan Kundra and Tejasswi Prakash met in the Bigg Boss 15 house and soon got into a romantic relationship. While the couple made many public appearances together, there were still rumours of their relationship troubles. In May, these rumours were strengthened when Karan shared a shayari on his Instagram story. The couple said, “Na teri shaan kam hoti, na rutba ghata hota, jo ghamand mein kaha, wahi hass ke kaha hota.” Many people saw this as a jibe at Tejasswi. However, soon in an interview with Times Now, Karan refuted these rumours and insisted the couple is going strong.

Asit Modi sexual harassment case

In June, the Mumbai police booked Asit Modi, the producer of the popular TV series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, on charges of sexual harassment made by actor Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal who worked on the show for 15 years. Other than Asit Modi, executive producer Jatin Bajaj and operational head Sohail Ramani were also named in the FIR.

Tunisha Sharma suicide

On December 24, 2022, actor Tunisha Sharma died by suicide on the set of her show Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul. Her co-star Sheezan Khan, who was reportedly dating Tunisha before they broke up, was arrested for abetment to suicide after Tunisha’s mother accused him of harassing and mentally abusing Tunisha. In response, Sheezan’s sister Falaq Naaz accused Tunisha’s mother of neglecting her daughter. Falaq alleged that the late actor was in deep depression due to her problematic upbringing. After over 70 days in jail, Sheezan Khan was granted bail by the court.
