It is a good film, and it leaves enough to be curious about what comes next. But given the scale of the project, the talent involved and the expectations surrounding it, I wanted to be more impressed.

Ramayana is a mixed bag. It scores high on visuals, VFX and scale, with Yash and Ravi Dubey emerging as its biggest highlights. However, a stretched first half, weak character portrayals and rushed handling of important mythological sequences prevent it from becoming the epic cinematic experience it aspires to be.

What can be better than hearing more of the softer, gentler Jai Siya Ram, rather than the muscular Jai Shri Ram? Yes, the latter phrase is implicit, but not, thankfully, in our face. I don’t know what the next part brings, but for now, I’m happy that this is the route Namit Malhotra and co chose.

To sum it up, Raavan may have had ten heads, but the makers have a rather bigger challenge to deal with: the expectations of an entire country. Part 1 has managed to navigate that minefield, giving us a visually spectacular retelling while staying true to the emotional beats of the epic. The real fireworks are reserved for the next instalment. With Sunny Deol’s arrival as Hanuman, the Sanjeevani buti scene and the much awaited war still to come, Part 2 has its work cut out. The good news? The makers seem to know what they are doing. The bad news for Raavan? Well, we all know how this ends.

The narrative slows down in places, and some visual effects could have been more polished. But the film’s expansive canvas, impressive music, strong performances and emotional sequences outweigh these shortcomings. The film also offers something to viewers who have grown up knowing the Ramayana. It gives them an opportunity to revisit familiar episodes through a fresh cinematic lens.If you enjoy Indian epics, large-scale filmmaking and emotionally driven stories, Ramayana deserves a theatrical viewing. The experience could be even more immersive in IMAX and 3D.One thing is clear: the film lives up to the considerable hype surrounding it.

A lavish Hindu epic gets the Bollywood blockbuster treatment in Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, a clunky, A.I. lip-synced English version that cuts out most of the musical sequences, en route to a dull cliffhanger set before the story really starts. While it comes close to engendering sympathy for the villainous demon Ravana, the film sticks too closely to traditional notions of light and darkness to stray from the poem’s prescribed path. Its depiction of the mythical Rama is simply too boring to root for.

Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is a clear passion project, despite its massive scope. It may have the budget and looks of a cinematic epic, but it does retain that passionate heart that these kinds of epics need. Even if it can’t quite match the heights of the genre, however, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is a great-looking epic that’s definitely worth checking out on the biggest screen possible. With Part 2 still on the way, hopefully the sequel can refine those characters without sacrificing the scope, potentially elevating itself to the true heights of the genre.

THE GOOD – Highly entertaining. Yash’s captivating performance. The amazing score by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer.THE BAD – The terrible visual effects and generative AI lip-syncing distract from a sweeping narrative that deserves to be told in the biggest way possible.

But perhaps that’s just a tradeoff that comes with being a legend. These characters have survived for centuries because they embody some of our greatest ideals and fears, and some of their immortality comes from our ability to see ourselves reflected back in two-dimensional characters. In moments when you struggle to invest in them, you can always sit back and enjoy the bright colors, swooping camera movements, and lavish orchestral score. Calling “Ramayana” epic may be a cliche, but there’s really no other word that would suffice.
