Actor Raaj Kumar, one of the legendary icons in Hindi cinema, featured in over 70 films. Widely loved by the masses for a plethora of roles, the actor was known for his unconventional acting style and dialogue delivery. The actor made headlines for several incidents and always stole the limelight for his eccentric nature and stubbornness. He always used to speak his mind and explored a variety of characters offered to him at the time. In an interview with Lehren TV once, the actor spilt beans on how he never knew defeat despite his few films not working at the box office. Revealing that he used to increase his fee by Rs 1 lakh for every next film, the actor said, “I remember my movies used to fail and my price used to go up by Rs 1 lakh and my secretary used to ask me, ‘Raaj sahab picture toh chali nahi, aap ek lakh aur badha rahe hai.’ Maine kaha picture chale na chale, main fail nahi hua isliye ek lakh aur badhega. Ye asliyat bata raha hun (My assistant would ask me why I keep increasing my price by Rs 1 lakh even when my movies don’t do business. I said, the movies might not have worked, but I always do and I haven’t failed).”
When asked about the film that failed miserably and was rejected by the masses, the Mother India actor, noted, “I don’t have regrets, I have never known defeat and I have never been enraptured by victory. I am always at a level of equanimity. For each role I did, I did justice to it within the given context. I never failed in that, pictures may have failed but I never did,” the actor said in a self-assured manner.”
The last film of Raaj Kumar was the 1995 released God and Gun. He married the love of his life Jennifer, who was an Anglo-Indian and an air hostess. For the rest of their lives, the couple stayed together and were blessed with three children. He succumbed to throat cancer in 1996.
