This Bollywood Actress Was The First To Play ‘Superman’ On Screen

Many legendary stars are still remembered for the most memorable characters they played on screen. One such actress made her mark in Bollywood only by playing the role of mother in numerous films. Throughout her career, she continued to be the favourite on-screen mother. Interestingly, she is also hailed as Bollywood’s first female Superman. Wondering who we are talking about? It’s none other than late actress Nirupa Roy. In 1960, Nirupa Roy became the first woman to play the role of Superman in the Hindi film industry. She played the titular character in the film Superman. It was directed by Mohammed Hussain and Anant Thakur. Superman also featured Helen, Jayaraj, and Tuntun in the lead roles. This character played by her garnered her the title of first female Superman of Bollywood.

Nirupa Roy forayed into the acting industry with the Gujarati film Ranakdevi. She also appeared in her first Hindi film Amar Raj in the same year. Her performance in the film Do Bigha Zamin (1953) led her to become a superstar, following which she never looked back. Later, she started playing mother’s role in every other film. The film Deewar, released in 1975, also had the legendary actress playing the mother of Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan. Directed by Yash Chopra, the film earned her a special identity in the industry. She began to be called as Amitabh Bachchan’s on-screen mother.

Nirupa Roy once made headlines for going to jail. The controversy erupted after the actress’ younger son’s wife Una Roy filed a case against her. Una accused Nirupa of demanding dowry and harassing their son. In addition to that, she had hurled many serious allegations against her following which the actress was punished by the court and sent to jail.

On October 13, 2004, Nirupa Roy succumbed to cardiac arrest at the age of 73. During her stint as an actress, she appeared in 250 films and even bagged three Filmfare Awards for different films. In 2004, she was conferred with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
