This 1971 Jeetendra Film Sold More Tickets Than Amitabh Bachchan And Dharmendra’s Sholay

As per reports, more than 31 crore tickets were sold for Jeetendra-starrer crime thriller Caravan during its lifetime.
Jeetendra, the veteran Bollywood actor affectionately known as the “Jumping Jack,” boasts an impressive career spanning around 200 films. But once, in an intriguing turn of events, the tickets for one of his movies outsold the superhit film Sholay released in 1975. This film, even eight years after its release, managed to set a remarkable record at the box office. Let’s delve into this cinematic gem and the records it achieved.
Over the course of three decades, Jeetendra has contributed a lot to the film industry with his exceptional acting prowess and distinctive dance style. The blockbuster that we’re discussing today is Caravan, released in 1971, starring Jeetendra and Asha Parekh in leading roles. In fact, upon its release in China, it emerged as a roaring success.
Reports indicate that globally, around 25 crore tickets were sold for the Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra starrer Sholay. In stark contrast, the Jeetendra-starrer crime thriller Caravan, directed by Nasir Hussain, surpassed this figure with more than 31 crore tickets sold during its lifetime. It’s estimated that the film raked in over Rs 1,300 crore in Asia.
However, the film’s success wasn’t confined to its storyline alone. The songs of Caravan were also chart-toppers, including hits like Chadti Jawaani Meri Chaal Mastani, Daiya Yeh Main Kahan Aa Phasee, Dilbar Dil Se Pyaare, Kitna Pyaara Vaada Hai and Piya Tu Ab To Aaja. Composed by RD Burman, the lyrics were penned by the famous poet Majrooh Sultanpuri. According to Box Office India, Caravan had a gross collection of about Rs 3.6 crore at the Indian box office in 1971.
Eight years after its Indian release, the film hit the silver screens in China in 1979. Reports suggest a staggering 8.8 crore tickets were sold in China alone. Meanwhile, in India in 1971, 1.9 crore tickets were sold. A report published in 2000 claimed that the total ticket sales for Caravan had exceeded 30 crore.
Following this movie, actress Asha Parekh skyrocketed to stardom overnight. She went on to work in numerous super-hit films like Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, Bharosa, Ziddi, Mere Sanam, Teesri Manzil and Love in Tokyo, to name just a few.
