Shaitaan Box Office Collection Day 1: Defies All Expectations, Takes A Very Good Opening!
It was predicted in this column that a double-digit start was definitely on the cards for Shaitaan, and with some push, even 12 crores was a possibility. Had that number also come in, it would have been considered quite good, especially considering the fact that getting audiences on the very first day in theatres has become a challenge of late. Moreover, the genre (supernatural/horror/psychological thriller) has its own limitations. However, with Ajay Devgn leading the show and Madhavan in the title role, there was a good opening still on the cards.
However, what transpired on Friday was simply beyond expectations. The start of the day was on the expected lines and in synch with the advance booking as well. It seemed like the film was comfortably poised for that 11-12 crores opening that was always on the cards. However, the momentum started building from the late afternoon itself. Positive word of mouth started spreading around the Vikas Bahl directorial, and suddenly, footfalls started building rapidly for the evening and night shows. This is when it was known that the 15 crores mark would be crossed.
With 15.21 crores coming in, Shaitaan has now found itself on a very solid footing. With the reviews for the film being also all-around good and audience word of mouth being positive, the film is now assured of a weekend of over 50 crores. Since it was also a partial holiday of Mahashivratri yesterday, an advantage did come in, which means growth today won’t be phenomenal. However, the collections of the Ajay Devgn starrer will certainly be more than Friday, and that would be good enough to set up the base for a solid Sunday ahead.
