Professor To Ek Bechara: Celebrating Kalpana Mohan’s Memorable Filmography

Originally named Archana, Kalpana Mohan rose to prominence as one of the leading actresses of the 1960s.

Kalpana Mohan came into the limelight after appearing in director Lekh Tandon’s movie Professor alongside Shammi Kapoor.

In the World of Hindi cinema, only a handful of stars have managed to carve out a profound legacy in their relatively short careers, leaving an indelible impression on audiences for years. Kalpana Mohan is one such luminary in the Bollywood entertainment industry, who, despite her brief stint, made a lasting impact.

Originally named Archana, Kalpana Mohan rose to prominence as one of the leading actresses of the 1960s. Her cinematic journey commenced with the film Pyaar Ki Jeet, but it was her role in director Lekh Tandon’s Professor alongside Shammi Kapoor that catapulted her into the limelight. The film, produced by F. C. Mehra, became a massive hit, featuring an ensemble cast including Bela Bose, Lalita Pawar, Tun Tun, and Iftekhar. The success of Professor led to its remakes in various languages, and the rights are currently owned by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

Following this triumph, Kalpana Mohan’s career soared as she graced popular shows like Teen Devian, Pyar Kiye Jaa, Biwi Aur Makan, and Nawab Siraj ud Daula. Her last cinematic appearance was in the 1972 action-drama film Ek Bechara, produced by B. N. Ghosh and directed by S. M. Abbas, starring Jeetendra, Rekha, and Vinod Khanna.

Despite her relatively brief career, Kalpana Mohan was acknowledged as one of the most successful actresses in Bollywood during the 1960s and 1970s. Her journey took a different turn when she decided to step back from acting after getting married.

Kalpana experienced two marriages in her lifetime. In the mid-1960s, she tied the knot with screenwriter and film director Sachin Bhowmick, but the union was short-lived. Subsequently, in 1967, she married an Indian Navy officer, with whom she had her only daughter. However, this marriage also ended in divorce in 1972, leading Kalpana to single-handedly raise her daughter.

In later years, the actress faced health challenges, undergoing treatment for cancer and grappling with pneumonia. Kalpana Mohan succumbed to cancer at the age of 65 at the Pune Hospital and Research Centre, marking the end of a luminous but tragically short-lived career in the world of Hindi cinema.
