Everybody was skeptical about how the Land of the Rising Sun would react to the film based on the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, aka Father of the Atomic Bomb. The bombs had a devastating impact on the people, and it lasted for years. It also received mixed reviews in the early screenings, but things look positive for the Cillian Murphy-led movie.

The historical epic focused on the inner turmoil of the physicist and other conflicts. It showcased how he and his team worked for years developing and designing the atomic bomb. They earned success on July 16, 1945, and the world’s first nuclear bomb, forever changing the course of history. The team did an amazing job portraying the characters and won all the major awards this season, including seven Oscars. The film was released in the US and several other parts of the world in July last year, and after a wait of eight months, Oppenheimer landed in Japan. However, according to Variety, Christopher Nolan’s film has achieved third place in Japan’s box office charts. It has opened with $2.5 million over the weekend. The film is being shown in 343 theatres across the nation.

As per the media outlet, Oppenheimer has surpassed Jason Momoa‘s DCEU film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s $1.6 million and Dune 2’s $1.3 million opening. According to Universal Pictures, this Christopher Nolan directorial saw the biggest opening weekend of 2024 for a Hollywood film in Japan. The local films that beat this Cillian Murphy starrer include the horror flick ‘Strange House’ and the animated movie, ‘Haikyu!!.’

The Oscar-winning movie was made on a reported budget of $100 million and currently stands at over $965 million worldwide.
