Bollywood saw the emergence of Naagin theme films after the release of the movie Nagin in 1954. 10 years later, the iconic role of actress Sridevi as a Naagin was seen in the movie Nagina in 1986. It was directed by Harmesh Malhotra and was written by Dr Achala Nagar. The movie had a lead cast of actors Rishi Kapoor, Amrish Puri and Sridevi. The song of the movie, Mai Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera, became a sensation after the release of the movie. It was sung by veteran and late singer Lata Mangeshkar while the music was composed by the duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The movie was a blockbuster hit at the box office. It became the second-highest-grossing movie of the year.
The sequel of the movie was released in 1989 with the title Nigahen: Nagina Part II. It starred actress Sridevi and Sunny Deol in the lead role. It was directed by Harmesh Malhotra but it couldn’t perform well at the box office. After this several movies were made on the theme of Nag-Nagin but were unsuccessful at the box office.
