Blast From The Past: When Karan Johar Revealed He Almost Ended Anushka Sharma’s Career

Karan Johar stated that he didn’t want Aditya Chopra to cast Anushka Sharma in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi marked the Bollywood debut of actress Anushka Sharma. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. The film, directed by Aditya Chopra, was released on December 12, 2008. The story revolves around a middle-class average guy (played by Shah Rukh) who turns himself into a charming man to win over his wife (Anushka Sharma). The film ran successfully at the box office, and audiences loved the sweet message delivered by the makers. Anushka Sharma received huge recognition for the film and started to receive several other opportunities thereafter.
Recently, a video of filmmaker Karan Johar has gone viral, where he can be seen stating that he didn’t want Aditya Chopra to cast Anushka Sharma in the film. Previously, Karan Johar has courted controversy for launching star kids in the industry. He has been targeted for allegedly promoting nepotism in Bollywood. The clip is from an old interview with Karan Johar. In the video, Karan further mentions that he had suggested another star kid’s name, but Aditya didn’t take his advice. This comment has infuriated netizens.
Narrating how Anushka Sharma came on board for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Karan Johar said that Aditya had shown him her pictures. Karan immediately disliked her and wanted to reject her. Later, when he saw Anushka in the film, he was impressed to witness her acting skills. Karan Johar confessed that he should have apologised to Anushka, as he could have been the reason to end her career even before it started. Karan added that he felt bad for judging Anushka on the basis of one picture.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was a huge hit, and the audience loved the on-screen pairing of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma. Later, she achieved stardom and worked in several big-budget films. She also worked opposite SRK in other films like Zero in 2018, Jab Tak Hai Jaan in 2012, and Jab Harry Met Sejal in 2017. In fact, Karan Johar himself cast Anushka Sharma in his film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, in 2016.
Anushka Sharma was last seen in a cameo in Qala in 2022, where she played the character of Devika.
Shah Rukh Khan’s recent film Jawan was released on September 7, 2023, and is running successfully at the box office. The audience is showering love in the film. Jawan is said to be his entry into the South African film industry.
