Keoghan would join fellow 2023 Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (the best actor nominee for “Aftersun”) in the film. Mescal is set to play Lucius, the son of Maximus’ lover Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen) in the sequel. It’s reported that Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta.

The original “Gladiator” starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman soldier forced into slavery who vowed revenge against Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Since Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator,” the story of the sequel will focus on the journey of Lucius.

The addition of Keoghan to the cast is sure to be a blessing for fans of “Gladiator.” Keoghan has made a splash with his performance in critically acclaimed films such as “Dunkirk” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” His upcoming roles include “The Batman” and “The Northman”.

The “Gladiator” sequel is set to be a must-see event and with Mescal and Keoghan on board, fans are sure to be in for an exciting ride. The film is scheduled to begin production in 2022 with a release date set for 2024.
