Jennifer Lopez On Evita Audition: ‘Prepared Singing My Heart Out, Then Madonna Had Part’ | Hollywood News

Nearly three decades later, Lopez is starring in her first-ever movie musical with Kiss of the Spider-Woman, an adaptation of the 1993 Broadway show.

Jennifer Lopez, 56, recently shared a throwback memory of her audition for the 1996 musical Evita during a post-screening Q&A for her upcoming film Kiss of the Spider-Woman on Wednesday, September 10. The singer-actress revealed that she tried out for the role of Eva Perón after Madonna had already secured the part.

Lopez recounted her experience, saying, “I went to audition for Evita for (director) Alan Parker. I had been practising for weeks and I sang my heart out. (Parker) goes, ‘You’re amazing. You know Madonna has the part, right?’ I said, ‘Okay, bye-bye. Nice to meet you.’”

Madonna Used The Opportunity Right

Madonna, now 67, starred as the Argentinian First Lady Eva Perón in the film, which went on to receive five Academy Award nominations in 1997 and won for Best Original Song. Director Alan Parker, who passed away in 2020 at age 76, helmed the project.

Lopez had previously referenced the audition in a January interview with The Hollywood Reporter during the Sundance premiere of Kiss of the Spider-Woman. “I remember auditioning for Evita, I remember auditioning for Chicago and for Nine — getting very close on Nine,” she said. “There were a lot of things I had always hoped to do that just weren’t the right time. But this is the right thing.”

Lopez Stars in Her First Movie Musical

Nearly three decades later, Lopez is starring in her first-ever movie musical with Kiss of the Spider-Woman, an adaptation of the 1993 Broadway show. The story follows two prisoners in a South American jail, a Marxist revolutionary (Diego Luna) and a gay window dresser imprisoned for “immoral behaviour” (Tonatiuh). The characters escape their harsh reality by imagining a Hollywood musical starring fictional screen star Ingrid Luna, portrayed by Lopez.

Lopez highlighted the challenges of performing musical numbers in the film. She told PEOPLE at Sundance that many sequences were filmed in one continuous take, in the style of classic musicals. “It’s pretty amazing when you see it and go, ’Oh, that was all one shot,’ ” she said. “A little extra challenge, but also exhilarating. You gotta get it right, and when you nail it, everybody’s like, ‘aah.’ “

Kiss of the Spider-Woman is set to release in theatres on October 10.
