Toxic is not the gangster Hollywood-style epic one expected (it has some shades of KGF) but it’s an ambitious effort undertaken by Yash and Geetu Mohandas to give the Indian audience a unique experiment and it delivers on that for the most part.

And that is perhaps the biggest disappointment of Toxic. There is ambition everywhere — in its world-building, performances, action, visuals and the sheer scale of its ideas. But ambition without cohesion can only take a film so far. And when the credits roll, what stays with you is not the bold experiment that Toxic promised to be, but the frustrating feeling of a film that came tantalisingly close to being something special — and failed.

There’s also a father-son angle, and when it locks in, the film comes together, at least for a while. It becomes the heavily stylised fever dream that perhaps it was aiming more fully for, but it comes in too late. The rest of it is Yash nursing his toxic self through choppy, rushed scenes, plowing through pliant female flesh, hacking and shooting humans, with the body count piled so dizzyingly high that you lose count almost as soon as it opens.How can a fairytale be so hollow? Too much sound, too much fury, signifying very little.

If you are a Yash fan, I am fairly certain it doesn’t matter what this review says. You are going to watch the film anyway. If you’ve been missing the hyper-masculine, gloriously violent action film, you might even want to watch it again.If that entire aesthetic is your ick, though, there are no prizes for guessing what you should do.Just carry some patience with you. The first hour can feel painfully stretched.

Fans of Yash get their fill of action and star power. For others, the more interesting aspect is how it explores masculinity, family, power and female agency. Toxic is stylish and ambitious, but only partly succeeds in trying to give a truly different perspective on women.

Overall, at more than three hours, Toxic becomes an exhausting experience. The film has the scale, star power and technical resources needed to deliver a major action spectacle, but the writing and narration fail to turn those elements into even a moderately engaging drama. In one word, Toxic is a mess. It has Yash’s swag, but its confused writing, exhausting runtime and lack of emotional or heroic connect make it a tedious watch. The final twist tries to create some impact, but it arrives too late to rescue an otherwise messy and tiresome narrative.

The extremely long three-hour runtime does more than test your patience. It gets on your nerves. Strangely, across the entire film, there is hardly a single block worth appreciating, apart from the lavish scale and rich visuals. Overall, TOXIC is a huge disappointment from Yash as his follow-up to the massive pan-India success of KGF. Despite the enormous scale and effort, the film disappoints on almost every count.
