Bollywood award shows are a glitzy affair with stellar performances and comedic sketches that remain etched in fans’ memories. However, a particular clip featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan hasn’t aged well, and fans are upset with how the actors spoke about the actress. The resurfaced clip also shows Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay Kapur, Kareena Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia’s reactions.

The clip is from when Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan were hosting a popular award show. Shah Rukh Khan said to Vidya Balan, “Honestly, between me and Saif, we love you with clothes…” Saif interjected, “Without clothes.” SRK said, “There should be no hard feelings.” The joke seemingly upset Karisma Kapoor, who was seated next to a laughing Sunjay Kapur. SRK told Vidya that he and Saif would take her phone number as they “really like” her. Saif then asked Vidya to comment on how they looked. Vidya clapped back, “You know, I must admit, when I first saw you on stage tonight, I said, ‘Wow, Yashraj has such cool waiters.’ You still love me?” This left Kareena Kapoor and Twinkle Khanna in splits.

The clip has resurfaced on social media, and fans are upset at this scripted segment. One person wrote, “Happy to see Karisma, Kareena, Tina and Dimple not happy with the way Vidya was objectified just for the sake of fun.” Another added, “Isn’t he the same SRK who keeps saying love women, respect women? And he is saying this on such a big platform.”

Another comment read, “That was actually very very offensive. Especially from the actor you have worked with in your first film. No wonder she is a better actor and much articulate than these two combined can ever be.” Another added, “I like how most women were not happy with the joke but were very happy with the comeback!!”

One person wrote, “It’s so sad that such things are considered funny. Happy she handled it well.” Another added, “How is that even funny, even if it’s scripted or not?” A comment read, “Vidya is smart, charming and graceful.” Someone else wrote, “Offence handled with brilliance.”

Vidya Balan’s Response

Saif and Shah Rukh were giving an award to Vidya for her fashion choices to make a mockery of the actress. Years later, Vidya addressed this in a conversation with Samdish Bhatia. Vidya said, “When they told me they’re going to give me the Na-Real award, I said, ‘Why me? My clothes are not just my choice, right?’”

“At that time, I was too new to have an opinion on anything. So they said, ‘No, we’re just doing this fun segment, so we’re going to give you this award.’ So I said, ‘Fine, but I’m going to share it with the costume designer and the director, and they said, ‘No, you mustn’t do that.’ And that, I think, is not nice,” the actress said.
