NBC’s legal drama Suits LA, a spin-off of the popular USA Network series Suits, has officially wrapped up, before it even got the chance to finish its first season. Despite high expectations, the show was cancelled just weeks into production. Reports suggest that the network scrapped Suits LA, along with several other projects, to make room in the schedule for the NBA’s return.
Originally premiering in 2011, Suits carved out a niche in the legal drama genre with its sharp writing and charismatic leads, Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams, who played Harvey Specter and Mike Ross. The original series experienced a resurgence in popularity recently, likely fueled by anticipation surrounding the spin-off.
Suits is still counted as one of the best legal dramas on the small screen. Now that Suits LA will not be getting another season, it is worth looking at what could actually save its legacy.
A Suits Film?
If fans’ suggestions are to be taken, the best way for the same franchise to continue is through a movie, which will have a better chance of bringing all the original core characters and giving a direct continuation of the story instead of deviating from it.
The previous challenges that Pearson and Suits LA had faced proved that the spinoffs cannot replicate, thereby, a movie can preserve the legacy by putting its main cast at the forefront and retaining the original theme. It is now up to the makers if a film will be planned in the future.
Speaking on the cancellation, Jeff Bader, the president of program planning strategy at NBC Universal Entertainment, explained that the network did not see any life moving forward with the series. “It’s so hard to talk about shows and which ones you bring back, and ’Suits’ had a very short run, but it really just has not resonated the way we thought it would. There can be many, many reasons why people are speculating why it hasn’t resonated, but it’s just not really showing the potential to grow for us in the future,” he added, as per Variety.
Suits LA centred on Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor who has reinvented himself by representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles.
