Tamil actor Simran’s speech at the JFW Movie Awards sparked buzz on social media. Made during her acceptance speech at the event where she won for her negative role in Andhagan, her ‘dabba role’ comment went viral which many speculated was intended for Jyotika who recently acted in Dabba Cartel. Now, she has opened up about the controversy, addressing the speculations around it. The actress also revealed that the message had reached the person it was actually for.

In a new interview, Simran was asked about people speculating that the comments she made on stage were pointed towards Jyotika. Replying, she said that Dabba Cartel is a good web series, adding that her comments are being overanalysed.

She said, “Dabba Cartel is a nice web series, people are just breaking down with their speculation. It reached the person correctly whom I mentioned. That person messaged me that she is sorry and didn’t mean to hurt me.”

In her speech at the JFW Movie Awards 2025, Simran recalled an incident that involved a fellow actress who cracked a joke, mocking her for playing “aunty roles”. Recalling her conversation with the fellow actress, Simran shared that she had texted her to laud her performance in a film but the response she received was derogatory as the latter joked saying, “At least I’m not doing aunty roles.”

Reacting, Simran called out the actress without revealing her identity and said, “But I feel it’s better to do aunty roles and main aunty roles – mother of 25 years. I have done it in ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ also, than playing dabba roles and doing nothing. That’s what I feel. We should feel confident about what we all want to do.”

After the speech went viral, the Internet claimed that her comment was either for Jyotika or Laila, as the former actress had recently appeared in the Netflix show, Dabba Cartel.

On the work front, Simran is riding high on the success of her latest release, Tourist Family. The film has had a positive response at the box office ever since arriving in theatres on May 1. Three weeks into the release, the film has grossed over Rs 70 crore despite its clash with the likes of Suriya’s Retro and Nani’s HIT 3.
