Lost gets lost in the righteousness of its intentions the screenplay flirts with many burning issues cast, opportunistic Politics ,the way the media business Works  but there isn’t enough rigor depth or even tension as vidhi is playing a dangerous game. Direction proves to be a stumbling block as the story takes several implausible turns and some characters have a sudden change of heart

Lost would have us believe that the youth of this country are as likely to be manipulated by rebels as by those that have the entire system at their mercy. Also, it cites statistics about the high number of people who go missing in this country every day and links it the more specific issue of the victimisation of political activists. That is a massive stretch. Lost in a maze of conflicting signals, Lost is a dispiritingly dithering shot at understanding the battle that rages between the essential and the expedient in a land of many intractable faultlines.

Choudhary’s 2016 ‘Pink’ was a solid, consistently engaging film in which all the main characters are carefully fleshed out: we are interested in each of the three young women who are up against the might of powerful louts who harass them. In ‘Lost’, parts of which may remind you of ‘Kahaani’ and ‘No One Killed Jessica’ (Kolkata, missing person, fiercely independent journalists upholding the values of integrity and justice), the plot’s focus on Vidhi reduces the other characters into satellites who revolve around her. The only one who lifts off the screen is Pankaj Kapur, playing her twinkly-eyed, wise grandpa. And that makes ‘Lost’ nicely atmospheric but ultimately dissatisfying.

Lost has a relevant premise, but it’s like most of the movie is still taking shape in the film-maker’s head. Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s painfully inert telling and garbled script makes it difficult to care about its protagonist’s persistent efforts. Except Vidhi, nobody’s presence holds any value in the grand scheme of things. Despite the promise of complexity and nuance, Lost refuses to dwell deeper into the conversations concerning human rights, extremist groups or political-media nexus.

The dialogues in the film will stay with you. However, the script has many loose ends that could have been tighter. The pace is unsteady, and the film ventures into too many issues. The old-world charm of Kolkata has been captured beautifully by cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay, with a sepia tone pervading all the frames. The music by Shantanu Moitra also fits perfectly. Lost might not be your easy breezy watch for the weekend, but it sure would make you think.

And just like Pink, the finale is both predictable yet powerful. Gautam hounds after a shocking discovery that she lost, where the title takes a metaphorical turn. Before the credits begin to roll, a voiceover tells us how things could be alright after a point, and the words that pop up on the screen suggest she never lost, and neither did this imperfect but impressive film.

Written by Shyamal Sengupta and Ritesh Shah, the movie showcases a battle between what’s right versus what’s the ultimate truth and it represents a higher quest and a search for lost values of empathy and integrity. It’s a tightly-knit script but demands a better climax. Definitely watch it for the journey and not for a cathartic end.
