A girl is never smart, she is over smart. A woman is not clever, she is cunning. Laapataa Ladies tramples these age-old narratives by stating loud and clear, “A ‘respectable’ girl is the biggest fraud in society’, as it conditions her to not question the status quo. The story doesn’t allow women to play the victim card either. It sternly says, “It’s not shameful to be a fool but being proud of one’s ignorance is a shame.” A delectable blend of heart, mind, and humour, this one’s an absolute winner.

Argylle turns out to be a spy film that promised much but ultimately failed to deliver. Despite an intriguing premise and a star-studded cast, the film’s inconsistent execution, shifting tones, and underexplored characters leave much to be desired. Regrettably, Argylle falls short of expectations, earning a disappointing rating of 1.5 stars.

Laapataa Ladies is an incisive social commentary film brought to life under the direction of Kiran Rao. It vividly displays the hurdles endured by women living in the Indian countryside, largely due to patriarchal norms. Key characters such as Maai, Jaya, and Phool embody the concept of sisterhood and underscore the theme of empowerment.

Laapataa Ladies dips its fingers into sour social issues but leaves a delightful taste. It highlights the follies of ghoonghat and questions the ‘parda’ system but never gets preachy. It is a must-watch clean family film that forces you to think but enjoy it even more. Kiran Rao once again manages to bring attention to the deep-rooted Indian reality by keeping the tone playful and upbeat. This is the biggest strength of Laapataa Ladies!

On the whole, LAAPATAA LADIES works due to the amusing plot, performances, underlying message and some memorable funny and emotional scenes. At the box office, it has the potential to grow with each passing day.
