Kunchacko Boban-starrer Chaaver’s Team Takes Stand Against Film’s Negative Reviews

Kunchacko Boban-starrer Malayalam film Chaaver garnered a range of reviews after its October 5 release. Although the creators haven’t alleged a deliberate smear campaign, they conducted a press conference, requesting reviewers to give the film a fair chance to connect with its target audience. At the press conference, Kunchacko Boban also raised concerns about film reviews being posted on booking platforms, even before its first show. He noted that some reviewers might do this intentionally, while others are honest in their assessments.
However, he emphasised that such early reviews don’t provide the film with an opportunity to connect with its intended audience. Kunchacko stressed that every film has its distinct audience, and just because it may not resonate with one person, doesn’t mean it won’t resonate with someone else.
Chaaver’s producer Arun V Narayan draws an analogy, suggesting that just like if you have a bad meal at a restaurant, you wouldn’t make a 20-minute video about it; similarly, if you don’t like a movie, it’s fine not to watch it. He questions whether there’s a need to exacerbate the situation by posting negative reviews in such a manner. He said that such acts can cause unnecessary harm to the film, without allowing it to prove itself over time.
Kunchacko Boban recognised the importance of freedom of speech but also pointed out that a handful of negative reviews can significantly influence those who might have otherwise enjoyed the film.
Kunchacko further expressed that when a small number of reviews can impact a much larger audience, it can jeopardise the success of a film and undermine the efforts and investments made in its production. As a solution, he suggested the need for some form of regulation or censorship on social media reviews to mitigate these potentially harmful effects.
Kunchacko Boban also discussed the nature of filmmaking, recognising that diverse tastes and opinions make it challenging to satisfy everyone. He shared his understanding of how negative reviews can be commonplace in today’s fast-paced film industry. Drawing from his 26 years of experience, he mentioned instances where his films initially received negative reviews but eventually gained positive acclaim through word-of-mouth. He also expressed concern about the current theatre culture, which lacks the same level of a supportive turnaround for films.
Chaaver is a political thriller directed by Tinu Pappachan. The movie features Kunchacko Boban, Antony Varghese, and Arjun Ashokan in key roles. Written by Joy Mathew, the film explores the intricacies of political parties in Northern Kerala. It revolves around the experiences of everyday political workers, who become pawns within the system.
