What began as a local environmental initiative in Maharashtra’s Sangli district is now set to gain national attention, with veteran Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff joining hands with Shiv Sena MLA Suhas Babar’s ambitious tree plantation campaign.
In a significant boost to the “Tree Army” movement, Jackie Shroff participated in a large-scale plantation drive at the Gardi-Ghanwad grounds in Vita town of Sangli, where nearly 4,500 saplings were planted under a joint initiative of Tree Army and the JK Foundation. The actor formally inaugurated the campaign and praised the efforts of Khanapur-Atpadi MLA Suhas Babar, calling attention to the importance of action-driven environmental conservation.
Known for his love for nature and greenery, Jackie Shroff used the occasion to deliver a simple yet powerful message. “If you give flowers, you receive flowers. If you throw stones, stones come back. One should remain calm in the face of criticism. We cannot become taller by cutting someone else’s legs,” he said, urging people to focus on positive contributions to society.
The actor also highlighted the need to protect the environment, describing the Earth as a mother that must be cared for through collective efforts. He lauded Babar for translating promises into action and said there is a vast difference between merely speaking about change and working sincerely to achieve it.
For MLA Suhas Babar, the plantation drive represents more than just an environmental activity. He emphasised that Tree Army is not associated with any political ideology but is a people’s movement aimed at creating a greener future. Babar revealed that he has pledged to plant trees equal to the number of votes he received in the Assembly elections and has set a target of planting 78,000 saplings over the next two years.
The MLA expressed confidence that Jackie Shroff’s association would help the movement reach a wider audience across India and beyond. “What started in Vita will now travel across the country. Jackie Dada’s support will help place Tree Army on the national and even global map,” he said.
The event also offered a glimpse of the actor’s simplicity. Welcomed with traditional hospitality by Babar’s family, Jackie Shroff enjoyed a humble local breakfast of bajra bhakri, ghee, jaggery and salt. Reflecting on the interaction, Babar said he was deeply impressed by the actor’s humility despite his celebrity status.
As environmental concerns continue to grow, the partnership between a grassroots movement and a widely respected public figure may prove to be a powerful example of how collective action can inspire meaningful change.
