He-Man has been a childhood favorite for many, thanks to the animated series, but his journey on the big screen has been far from successful. One must appreciate the makers for attempting to reboot a character whose previous cinematic outing was a flop, especially when most such failures are forgotten over time. The idea of bringing the hero back is executed in a fairly decent manner, even if it doesn’t reach greatness. The film leans slightly towards childish fun, but it remains entertaining nonetheless. Opinions may differ, but the makers have clearly added kiddish elements to appeal to kids. After all, He-Man has always belonged to kids, and while we once loved him as children, we now view him through a more critical lens.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe begins with young Adam (Artie Wilkinson-Hunt), the prince of Eternia, portrayed as weak and lacking the qualities of a true warrior. When Skeletor (Jared Leto) attacks Eternia in search of the Sword of Power, Adam is sent to Earth through a portal, losing the sword in the process. Years later, adult Adam Glenn (Nicholas Galitzine) rediscovers the sword but struggles to harness its power. His childhood sweetheart, Teela (Camila Mendes), rescues him from danger and brings him back to Eternia. As Skeletor’s forces close in, Adam finally begins to unlock his true strength. The question remains—can he rise in time to save his kingdom?

The film runs for over two hours and suffers from pacing issues. The first hour takes its time to establish the world, while the middle portion manages to stay engaging. However, the narrative loses momentum in the latter half before picking up again with an action-packed climax. The underdeveloped romantic subplot between Adam and Teela feels unnecessary, though Teela’s independence take (friend zone) on the same is a welcome touch. The pre-climax sequence, in particular, feels stretched and somewhat underwhelming, especially as it portrays He-Man as unusually helpless despite wielding the Sword of Power. That emotional conflict doesn’t land as effectively as intended. Still, the film remains watchable and largely succeeds in its goal of delivering entertainment.

On the performance front, Nicholas Galitzine looks handsome and delivers a decent performance as Adam/He-Man. Camila Mendes is visually striking and leaves a strong impression with her screen presence. Those eyes were killer! Jared Leto brings Skeletor to life with conviction, while Alison Brie fits well as Evil-Lyn. Charlotte Riley and James Purefoy perform competently, and Morena Baccarin adds charm. Idris Elba brings in a mix of humor and bravery, though the tonal balance of the film remains uneven. Overall, the cast does a respectable job in holding the film together.

Being a big-budget film, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe looks visually grand. The action sequences and visual effects are well-executed, offering a satisfying big-screen experience, especially in IMAX. The editing is average, but the background score effectively taps into nostalgia. The production design is decent, complementing the fantasy setting. Director Travis Knight delivers a film that caters well to fans but falls short of creating a universally appealing superhero spectacle, which is crucial for reviving the franchise. In the end, it’s a decent watch—nothing extraordinary, but certainly a noticeable improvement over the largely forgotten 80s film.
