The first half feels determined to make you laugh through sheer persistence. The second half is marginally better, mostly because you’ve adjusted your expectations by then. One hour into the film, you start having flashbacks to Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Partner, Sajan Chale Sasural and even Garam Masala (which is not a David Dhawan film) – probably because your brain is searching for better versions of what it’s currently watching.If this is where David Dhawan has chosen to hang up his boots, perhaps it’s time to reconsider. The king of chaotic comedy deserves a better curtain call, and so do his fans.

Overall, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai asks very little of it’s audience beyond a willingness to surrender to it’s madness. The first half is a slog, the runtime is far longer than it needs to be. But once the chaos kicks in, the laughs begin to follow. Not every joke lands, but enough do for the film to scrape through.
