EXCLUSIVE: Banita Sandhu Opens Up On Her Childhood In Wales
While many fans know her as a rising star in Indian cinema, few know about her unique journey that began in Wales.
“I was born and raised in Wales, which is in the United Kingdom,” Banita shared with a smile. “I had a pretty simple childhood, went to the same school from about age 3 to 18. It was a nice, peaceful kind of childhood. Then, when I turned 18, I moved to London for university.”

Growing up in Wales, Banita was surrounded by the charm of a close-knit community and the calm of a small-town life. But what made her childhood stand out was the beautiful blend of British and Indian cultures. Even though the area she lived in was mostly White, her home was a little India of its own.
“As for Indian roots, I grew up with a lot of Indian culture around me. Like Indian food, Bollywood songs. Outside the house, it was a pretty White community. And I think that’s why when I first came to India, it was the first time I felt like, ‘Oh, I belong here.’ I saw people who looked like me and listened to the same songs I used to jam to in the car with my mom.”
That moment of connection when she visited India for the first time clearly left a lasting impact. She admitted that growing up without a strong South Asian community around her made her appreciate the value of cultural belonging. “Looking back, if I ever have kids, I’d want them to grow up with that community because it’s so important.”

When asked about her parents and how they came to live in the UK, Banita revealed a fascinating family story that stretches across generations and even touches on history.
“Well, they’re like me, born and raised in the UK. I’m the spitting image of my dad. Actually, it was my dad’s grandfather who first came to London. On my mom’s side, her dad fought in the World War for the British. He’s Punjabi, obviously. He was invited to bring his family to live in the UK as a thank you for his service. That’s how my mom’s side ended up here too.”
