On the whole, Bandar is very realistic but it is not engaging or entertaining. Despite a good beginning (initial part of the film), the film will face rejection at the box-office because it lacks commercial ingredients and has an overdose of festival cinema ingredients.

To sum it up, Bandar is a decent film that entertains and makes you ponder, much like many of Anurag Kashyap’s works. It is gripping, engaging and, most importantly, feels real. That realism is enough to keep you invested in the story, provided you are willing to let the narrative simmer and have the patience to discern the artistic choices embedded within it. Bandar may not be Kashyap at his sharpest, but it still carries enough bite to make it a decent watch.

So, to sum it all up, Bandar is generally engaging. It nails focusing on the human impact of an accusation and the chaos afterwards. Considering our quick-fix opinions often beat the facts these days, this film feels very timely and relevant.

The leaps that the film makes, even those that are in the right direction, are inconsistent in terms of both arc and outcome. If not a mess, Bandar is a bit of a tangle that is hard to wrap one’s head and heart around.

Bandar is not intended for all viewers. It occupies a specific niche and comfortably resides there without attempting to cater to a broader commercial audience. That, too, is a success.

The first half is gripping and relentlessly engaging. The second half, unfortunately, circles the same ideas repeatedly and loses momentum. The prison remains fascinating, but the narrative starts feeling trapped within it. The film seems to believe that making the audience squirm is the same as making them question.

But once Bandar ends, one gets a sense this is a film that refuses to give easy answers. If we don’t get to see the victim as much as the accused, it has less to do with the fact that the story is being told from the accused’s lens and more to do with how Kashyap revels in the ambiguity of his narratives. It somehow oscillates between Ugly and Kennedy. Something in the central characters change. After a point, they are used to inhaling the sinister energy in the air. They make peace with the unfairness of law, lawlessness and life. They become exactly like the name of this movie.

Anurag Kashyap’s latest film Bandar is not just a film; it is an experience in itself that will leave you shaken. The film follows the journey of Sameer Mehra, an aspiring actor trying to establish himself in the film industry while struggling with loneliness and instability in his personal life. His life takes a dramatic turn when he connects with a woman through a dating app, leading to a brief romantic involvement. What begins as a normal relationship soon spirals into a situation that completely changes his life when he is unexpectedly taken into police custody.Bandar is not just a film, but an intense cinematic experience that reflects on modern relationships, digital vulnerability, and the consequences of misunderstanding in a connected world.
