Aziz Ansari is stepping behind the camera for the first time. The actor and comedian is marking his directorial debut with the existential comedy, Good Fortune. Premiered this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film stars one of his own favourite actors, Keanu Reeves.
During its world premiere, the filmmaker and actor talked to a media portal and expressed his happiness about casting Keanu Reeves. The 42-year-old director said that it was both a dream come true and a bold move, considering the actor is best known for his action-packed roles in The Matrix and John Wick franchises.
Aziz Ansari calls Keanu Reeves ‘a great friend and collaborator’
Speaking to PEOPLE on the TIFF red carpet, Aziz said, “You know, when you meet him, it’s intimidating, because he is an icon of the screen. I grew up watching him and all his films. So it was pretty mind-blowing to get to meet him and then, on top of that, work with him. He’s now a great friend and collaborator.”
Aziz Ansari heaps praise on Keanu Reeves’s versatility
Ansari then praised Reeves for his willingness to dive into comedy, a genre far from the adrenaline-pumping action roles that have defined much of his career.
“I didn’t really know what to expect because he’s pretty mysterious, you know? But he was just so game,” said Ansari.
He went on to reveal, “He was working with me and Seth, and we’re such comedy guys, we are really comfortable in the way we work. And he really just rolled with everything. And he really just was game for everything. I told Seth at one point, ‘Imagine if we had to do an action movie, how uncomfortable we would be. [We’d go], wait, Keanu, what do we do? What do we do?’”
“He’s such a pro, and he was just so down to play with us, and he’s the soul of the movie, and he just does a wonderful job,” the director adds.
Good Fortune’s storyline and release date
The film follows a well-meaning but inept angel named Gabriel (played by Reeves), who meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Ansari) and a wealthy venture capitalist (Rogen). The movie, made by the Parks and Recreation alum, also features Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh. Mark your calendars! Good Fortune will release in theatres nationwide on October 17.
