Aamir Khan Compares Thugs of Hindostan To Sholay:
In a candid interview with SCREEN, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan drew an interesting parallel between his 2018 film Thugs of Hindostan and the iconic classic Sholay, stating that both films share a strikingly similar narrative structure.

Elaborating on the comparison, Aamir explained that Thugs of Hindostan follows a “very normal story” format, much like Sholay. In the latter, Sanjeev Kumar’s Thakur is the central character whose family is brutally wiped out, setting the stage for a revenge-driven plot. He seeks help from two outsiders, Jai and Veeru, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra respectively. However, despite their prominence, Jai and Veeru are not the emotional core of the story—it ultimately belongs to Thakur.
Drawing a parallel, Aamir pointed out that in Thugs of Hindostan, the narrative similarly revolves around Zafira, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh. Her character, driven by the trauma of losing her family, forms the emotional backbone of the film. Aamir’s own character, Firangi, much like Jai and Veeru in Sholay, plays a supporting yet crucial role in aiding her journey.
“So, in terms of its formula, it was more similar to a film like Sholay,” Aamir remarked, emphasizing that while the storytelling framework may echo a familiar template, the characters and their arcs bring their own uniqueness.

The comparison sheds light on how classic storytelling patterns continue to influence modern cinema, even in large-scale productions like Thugs of Hindostan. However, the latter was a box office flop, unlike the legendary blockbuster by Ramesh Sippy.
