A Dramatic Take On The Conflict Between The Higher And Lower Classes

RATING – 3/5*

Namak Haraam Review Movie Talkies:

Hrishikesh Mukherjee made an iconic film, Anand (1971), with Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, and the trio returned with Namak Haraam. It is not a comedy like some of Mukherjee’s films, nor is it a deeply emotional or philosophical drama like Anand, but rather a simple drama centred on mill workers’ issues. Hollywood had made several notable films on mill worker strikes in the past, and Bollywood too had its share of such stories in the 1950s and 60s. Mukherjee elevates the same theme into a friendship drama in this film.

Namak Haraam Story:

Somu and Vicky are best friends. Somu comes from a poor family, while Vicky belongs to a wealthy one. After a union leader insults Vicky at the factory, he plans revenge. To execute it, Somu suggests joining Vicky’s mill as a worker and sabotaging the union leader. However, during the process, Somu realises the harsh realities of the workers’ daily lives and switches sides. This creates a rift between Vicky and Somu. Vicky’s selfish and business-minded father then plays dirty tricks, leading to tragic consequences.

Namak Haraam Cast:

The film is driven by Rajesh Khanna’s superb performance — he is a perfect fit for such roles. Amitabh Bachchan does well in his part, while Simi Garewal plays her character with sincerity. Rekha shares decent chemistry with Khanna, and supporting actors like Asrani, A. K. Hangal, Om Shivpuri, and Manmohan are effective.

Namak Haraam Movie Review:

Kishore Kumar’s melodies from the album have become memorable, with Nadiya Se Dariya being a standout. Gulzar and Mukherjee craft a socially important and emotional story that resonated strongly with the working class at the time and for decades afterward, until mill culture gradually faded with urban commercialisation. Even today, the film makes some valid points, and Mukherjee’s direction presents them effectively.

Namak Haraam

As pure entertainment or high drama, the film may lack repeat value, but it comfortably remains a worthwhile one-time watch.
