Why, oh why, would the people who gave us India’s first web series and then went on to deliver shows like Panchayat and Gullak think a foray into a deep and dark forest would yield dividends? The Vvaan – Force of the Forest is a film lost in the woods. It never makes its way out.

The Vvaan has an interesting idea at its core and deserves credit for attempting to bring Indian folklore and fantasy together. It is entertaining in parts, with smart dialogues, some genuinely funny moments and committed performances from its cast. However, an inconsistent screenplay, forced humour and unnecessary songs prevent it from becoming a consistently engaging experience.

It is a film that can be enjoyed with the entire family, including children and older members. It also makes for a fun watch with friends. With Chhath Puja setting the perfect festive backdrop, The Vvaan: Force of the Forrest makes for a fresh and engaging watch this weekend.

Overall, there was genuine potential in making a fantasy horror around a Goddess and the Chhath Puja. It could have given The Vvaan an identity of its own, rooted in a mythology that feels distinctly Indian. Instead, the film gets distracted by everything around its central idea. By the end, the Goddess, the folklore, and everything seem to be fighting for space with the comedy and songs. For a film that had such an interesting divine premise, The Vvaan eventually does surprisingly little with it.

The Vvaan: Force of the Forrest has the ingredients of a more layered fantasy thriller but does not bring them together consistently. Its folklore, atmosphere and visual ambition are its strongest elements, while the rushed character development and increasingly conventional supernatural conflict limit its impact. What could have been a nuanced tale about faith, greed, development and the consequences of disturbing nature instead becomes a moderately engaging supernatural adventure that only partially realises the potential of its premise.

The Chhath connection feels forced, while the climax takes the film into completely bizarre territory. In trying to do too much, the film forgets to tell a simple, engaging story. The film has ambition, but ambition alone cannot make a confused screenplay work. For a story built around a mysterious forest and supernatural powers, there is surprisingly little here to believe in.
