So, this sprawling, bloody underworld drama is, when it pauses for breathers and allows the characters to converse, occasionally turns into a family drama that explores love, loyalty, envy, friendship and brotherly bonding. In Mirzapur, the families that stick together survive despite all the odds stacked against them.A Mirzapur movie franchise might not be such a bad idea provided the makers find enough narrative meat to pad it with.

Stay for the post-credit scene. There is a clear signal that this is not the end and that more is coming. The material still breathes better in the longer OTT format. As a theatrical outing, it delivers enough of the old bhaukaal to justify the ticket if you love this chaotic universe, even if it never fully rises above being a safe, familiar companion piece.

Overall, Mirzapur: The Movie knows its audience, and more importantly, it knows what that audience wants. There are enough callbacks to make fans grin and enough new twists to prevent the whole thing from feeling like a recycled season. And of course, enough violence to ensure nobody mistakes this for a family drama. Yes, three and a half hours is a commitment, but so is watching three seasons of people fighting over a throne nobody has ever managed to sit on peacefully. At least this time, the investment comes with a big-screen payoff. Also, Munna bhaiya truly amar hain.

It is a film made with obvious love for the world, its characters and, most importantly, its fans. And that love is visible in every little moment. But somewhere between trying to give every character a moment and every relationship a backstory, the film becomes a little too indulgent. Mirzapur does feel exactly like the chaotic, pulpy ride you signed up for. Maybe you can just take along a little extra patience when you head to the theatres.

Mirzapur The Movie isn’t devoid of moments, and the return of its iconic characters carries undeniable emotional and nostalgic value but nostalgia alone cannot recreate the magic of the original series.The film deserves credit for attempting to explore a different side of its characters, but it loses some of the rawness, profanity, unpredictability and adrenaline that made Mirzapur so addictive. It has the faces, the world and the legacy, but somewhere along the way, it loses touch with the very madness that made Mirzapur special.
