The SunnyDeol – RajkumarSantoshi combo gets it right yet again… Unconventional plot, strong emotions, power-packed performances are its USPs… Carries a strong, pertinent message. Final word? Batwara1947 is worth a watch… Yes, it defies the familiar template associated with SunnyDeol films, but it has the emotions, performances, and, above all, the message to strike a chord.

The irony is that Batwara 1947 is terrific as a text. Adapted from the play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the writing has ideas, the conversations have weight, and the central metaphor is powerful. But cinema needs emotional texture, lived-in relationships and performances that make you believe in the people on screen. It has all the right things to say but doesn’t know how to, and that makes this potentially moving story feel surprisingly cold.

Over here, Santoshi juggles intimate family drama with trauma of migration, violence and chaos. The key is to make sure the spectacle never overshadows the human story. AR Rahman’s music and Javed Akhtar’s lyrics lend a certain prestige to the project.Batwara 1947 has a promising subject, cast and emotional ambition. If you are into Indian history, Partition stories and character-driven Hindi cinema, Batwara 1947 is worth a watch.

Countries can be divided. Homes can be divided. Land can be divided. Humanity does not have to be. Batwara 1947 has a powerful story at its heart and attempts to approach partition through the deeply personal experiences of people who were forced to leave their homes. Shabana Azmi’s performance and the film’s central conflict work in its favour. However, uneven writing, familiar characterisation and inconsistent pacing prevent it from becoming the moving Partition drama it could have been. The film has its heart in the right place, but the execution does not always match the magnitude of its subject.
