Weakest film in the YRFSpyUniverse… Brilliant action set pieces, stunning visuals, and a few well-executed sequences, but the writing simply doesn’t connect… Missed opportunity! AlphaReview Final word? YRF needs to reset and reboot the #YRFSpyUniverse and bring back the believability, emotional connect, and relatability that got audiences hooked on these films in the first place.

Shiv Rawail’s direction is not up to the mark. He has not been able to camouflage the defects in the drama and has also not been able to involve the viewers in the narrative. Of course, his making and takings are slick, but thanks to the dull script, the film looks like a body beautiful which lacks a soul. On the whole, Alpha is a below-average fare and will, therefore, not find appreciation. Considering the huge cost, it will entail losses to all concerned.

Alpha is more coherent than the expensive spoof that War 2 often resembled. There are flashes of ambition, well-mounted action and glimpses of what the film could have been. But glimpses are not enough. The last truly satisfying film from this universe was War back in 2019. Since then, the graph has steadily dipped. Alpha doesn’t drag it further down, but it certainly doesn’t raise the bar either.

To me, that’s the worst part: here’s a film telling us to believe that a lone female ranger can blow up a massive superstructure, housing a gigantic lab running a scheme thought up by a mad scientist type, and this highly trained assassin will then meekly do what she’s told? It would fit in if the film was going for the fun comic-book feel of ‘Pathaan’, where eye-rolls are served along with eye-watering high octane scenes, but Alpha asks us to take it seriously. It ends up dull and dreary.

On paper, it should have been a slam dunk. Instead, it settles for being just okay. It looks expensive. The action is slick. The performances are solid. But somewhere between the explosions, emotional reunions and universe-building, it forgets to give us a story that truly stays with us. Like we said at the beginning, some missions are impossible. Alpha isn’t one of them. It simply doesn’t complete the mission as convincingly as it should have.

It’s a bad film. It offers the same overused elements that audiences are already tired of. There’s nothing fresh in the story, the action feels childish, and many scenes make absolutely no sense. On one hand, the makers talk about peak detailing, but on the other, they include moments so absurd that they’re unintentionally funny.

Alpha is an enjoyable addition to the YRF Spy Universe that emphasizes performances and action over its screenplay. Alia Bhatt reestablishes herself as a capable action star, while Sharvari Wagh delivers a commendable supporting role. However, the narrative occasionally treads familiar ground. Alpha offers a delightful cinematic experience for fans of stylish spy films. If you seek a more substantial spy-thriller, consider watching Dhurandhar. There, I said it!

Alpha is an entertaining entry in the YRF Spy Universe that works more on performances and action than on its screenplay. Alia Bhatt redefines herself as an all-out action star. Sharvari Wagh gives an appealing supporting performance. But the story occasionally walks familiar paths. Alpha is a fun theatre experience for fans of stylish spy entertainers. If you want real spy-thriller meat, go watch Dhurandhar. There I said it!
