The best part of the film is not what will happen — the title and trailer make that clear — but the how. Bringing a love story to a time when audiences have become accustomed to celebrating hatred and othering is itself an act of rebellion, even a political gesture. Imtiaz Ali, along with Naseeruddin Shah and Diljit Dosanjh, breaks your heart to mend it again.

Not completely flawless, the movie has some confused characterising too, and you need to keep guessing who is whose mother or father, but overall Main Vaapas Aaunga is a mesmerising watch, and the look of the movie is to die for. It is a heartfelt movie, and the best part is the way it connects to the present war situation in the world, so just watch the film till the very end. Not just cinematically, the film shines in every possible way, but it is an urgent watch because of its connection to present-day situations. To connect with every scene, you better stay glued to the big screen!

Overall, perhaps what lingers most about Main Vaapas Aaunga is that it isn’t really a film about Partition or even lost love. It’s a film about memory itself. About the people and emotions that refuse to leave us, even when everything else begins to fade. In an era where Hindi cinema often mistakes scale for feeling, Main Vaapas Aaunga delivers something far rarer: a deeply human story. It may stumble occasionally, but when it soars, it reaches the kind of emotional heights few filmmakers today can access. By the time the credits roll, you are left with moist eyes, and the lingering ache of a story that refuses to leave you long after you have left the theatre.

What remains is a visually handsome drama weighed down by its pacing, weakened by an unconvincing romance and burdened by ideas that are more questionable than profound. The longing is real. The emotion is sincere. The storytelling, unfortunately, never catches up.Quite an unlikely Imtiaz Ali film. Especially for those who love Imtiaz Ali films.

For me, the film’s weaker portions are papered over by the ones that hold us, re-uniting us with a filmmaker unafraid of drama, telling us a story about memory and loss, and the power of home-coming.

Main Vaapas Aunga sees Partition through the eyes of lovers who don’t care about politics, religion, or what others believe. It is about what Partition stole from ordinary people. Imtiaz Ali reminds us that history may remember borders, but those who lived through it remembered the people they lost. The film makes you yearn for a love like Keenu and Jiya’s, but never for the pain of waiting a lifetime to reunite.
