On the whole, Nishaanchi is an entertaining fare and deserves to score at the ticket windows. But it has taken a very slow start because of almost complete lack of awareness about the film as well as its release. Collections will pick up because of positive word of mouth, but the poor start will tell on the overall box-office performance. It is the kind of film which will be cherished for years together.

Jolly LLB 3 does not have the scope to actually delve deep into the economical fallout of unchecked development, question the inherent inequalities in the system, the endemic corruption or the lack of political will that allows the poorest of the poor to fall through the cracks. But it does shift gears from humour to violence to courtroom rhetoric, so the right questions are highlighted.

‘Nishaanchi’ is not a perfect film, but it is a compelling one. The runtime is heavy, and the songs don’t stay with you, but the world Kashyap builds and the performances make it worth sitting through. It mixes crime, comedy, and family drama in a way that feels both old-school and new. More than anything, it shows Kashyap in control of his material again, something missing in his recent films. ‘Nishaanchi’ may only be Part One, but it leaves you curious about what comes next. If Kashyap keeps the momentum, Part Two could be even stronger.

Nishaanchi is not a story. It’s a swagger-soaked saga. It’s rough-edged, earthy, delirious and unapologetically bizarre and revels in its maximalism. It has anarchy written all over it. In its own warped way, it’s a reflection of the land it comes from – not always prim but bustling with character and chutzpah, impossible to look away from. And you won’t miss Sneha Khanwilkar because Anurag Saikia, Manan Bharadwaj and Dhruv Ghanekar have built a soundscape that’s rich in folk, funk and filmi-ness. Is Nishaanchi as good as Gangs Of Wasseypur? Is Anurag Kashyap back? ‘Filam Dekho’ and find out.

Nishaanchi is a classic Bollywood entertainer, which will remind you of past several masala movies. The film has music, action, romance, emotions and lots of family drama. With friend betraying friend and lover betraying lover, Anurag Kashyap has laid a trap for audiences to step into theatres for Nishaanchi Part 2. But it only remains to see if the man can recreate his history with Nishaanchi, like he did in 2012 with Gangs Of Wasseypur. Being a good one-time watch, the film easily deserves 3 out of 5 stars.
